From Assistive Tool to Dignified Wearable: The Red Dot Best of the Best WSF1 Exoskeleton

WalkON Suit F1 uses independent donning, crutch-free walking and a more approachable appearance to turn an exoskeleton from a medical aid into a wearable people can use with greater independence and dignity.

Traditional exoskeletons can help people walk, but they often require assistance to put on, depend on crutches and look like medical equipment. For users with limited mobility, the burden is not only physical; it is also social and emotional.

The WSF1 team identified a practical barrier: many users wear an exoskeleton only occasionally because they depend on other people and feel uncomfortable about its appearance. The product therefore began with a different goal—something a person would want to wear, could put on independently and could take outside without feeling conspicuous.

With an approach-and-front-loading system, the device can move into position while the user is seated. The leg frame opens from the front, supports automatic fastening and reduces the need to bend down or wait for another person.

Actuators across the hip, knee and ankle, combined with balance control, support walking without crutches. This is not only a technical improvement; it returns ordinary actions such as carrying a bag, greeting a neighbour or embracing family to the user.

The visual language also moves away from exposed machinery. Curved surfaces, dark technical textiles, controlled lighting and integrated components make the product feel closer to high-end sportswear than a cold mechanical frame.

The design significance of WSF1 is that it changes the question from “can the device help someone walk?” to “can the person live more independently and naturally?” Inclusive design begins when the product adapts to the user, rather than asking the user to adapt to the device.
